Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Fiorentina star Nikola Milenkovic as an alternative to Leicester City defender Harry Maguire.

The 21-year-old was a target for Jose Mourinho in 2018 and United failed with a bid of roughly £36million to sign him earlier this year.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made two signings so far this summer but remains keen to make further additions and wants a center-back to partner Victor Lindelof. Maguire, 26, is considered the ideal candidate but Leicester want £90m for the England defender and United are unwilling to meet the Foxes’ valuation.

The Leicester City defender has established himself as one of the finest in his positions in the Premier League over the past two years. And having been linked with him last summer as well, Manchester United are trying to sign the England international this time out as well. To that end, Manchester United has reportedly submitted a £70 million offer for Maguire.

That’s forced Solskjaer to look into alternative options and Gianluca Di Marzio claims United have approached Fiorentina for Milenkovic. Though a bid was not made, United reportedly sounded out the Serie A club as to the defender’s availability. Fiorentina wanted around £45m for the Serbian in January and would likely accept a similar amount this time around.

Manchester United’s defensive issues were laid bare for everyone to see this past season. The Red Devils finished with their worst-ever defensive record in Premier League history, letting in as many as 54 goals, highlighting their problems at the heart of the backline.

The signing of a center-back would come from Solskjaer’s remaining budget but any further deals are likely to depend on the departures of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku. Solskjaer is determined to keep Pogba but United are willing to let Lukaku join Inter Milan, provided the Serie A club meet their £75m valuation of the Belgian.
