Guardiola: Sterling can reach the same level as Messi and Ronaldo

Guardiola: Sterling can reach the same level as Messi and Ronaldo, Manchester City will do its utmost to help Raheem Sterling reach the same level as the  “absolute legends” of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, says Guardiola

The England International was in excellent form in the early phases of the 2019-20 season, following two extremely successful campaigns that saw him score 35 league goals as City won back-to-back Premier League titles.

Raheem Sterling also found the net in Euro 2020 qualifying victories over Bulgaria and Kosovo while away on international duty, although Guardiola played down comparisons with superstars Messi and Ronaldo before his side clash with Norwich City.

The Spaniard does not, however, see any reason why the former Liverpool forward, 24, should not have aspirations to match the duo’s lofty norms.

“He’s not at this stage right now, perhaps I wish in the future,” Guardiola informed the media.

“They have won the Ballon d’Or and all the individual awards every single season, except maybe last season.”

So these two guys ‘ consistency – they’re legends, they’re something distinctive in world football. And if Raheem is able to target this level, wow.

We’re going to be here to help him and, of course, he can do it, I’m not going to be the guy to say don’t think about it.

“But right now, no one, not in this club or in all the clubs around the globe, can compare to what they have accomplished for 10 years every single week. They [ Messi and Ronaldo ] are complete legends and no one can compare them, no one.”

After the win over Bulgaria, England manager Gareth Southgate said that his willingness to score objectives was the greatest shift in Sterling’s attitude. “I believe he played extremely well with Brendan Rodgers in Liverpool, and he’s performed extremely well with the national team,” Guardiola said.

“So, I think his style, his desire, I think the most I’ve seen from the beginning is the fact that he has an incredible mentality, he’s a winning player,” he said,

“Before he did good things but didn’t finish too much. And now he is a player who is able to win matches on his own.”
